State Schools Top Of The Class For Science And Maths
And the winners are...
When it comes to the ‘gold-standard’ maths and sciences A-level subjects, state schools lead the way.
An overwhelming 83% of The Good Schools Guide A level Awards 2009 for teaching excellence, at an English school, have been awarded to state schools.
Only three independent schools make it on to the list of class winners, two of these are girls’ only schools, the other is co-ed.
The results fly in the face of the oft-perceived trend that science and maths – the traditional hard-core A-levels - are the domain of elite independent schools. And with only a couple of selective schools on the leader board but a good many more 16+ colleges it seems 11+ success doesn’t necessarily dictate future triumphs.
