What says..

‘They’re not just dancing around in legwarmers all the time – the academics are really serious here,’ said parent. What the school says...

ArtsEd is an exceptional independent school, where the performing arts sit at the heart of an outstanding education. Pupils immerse themselves in high-calibre academic study whilst developing their talent and their passion for performance.

Our successful balance of vocational and academic classes instils in our pupils a deep-seated confidence and a broad range of skills, giving them the scope, at 16 or 18+, to pursue a path that’s right for them.

Founded 100 years ago by two ground-breaking educationalists, Grace Cone and Olive Ripman, our ethos remains true to their vision: to provide a broad and balanced education stretching pupils to achieve both their academic and artistic potential.

Headmaster

Since September 2023, Peter Middleton.

Usually around 65 applications for the 24 year 7 places but school won’t take full number if there aren’t 24 good enough to take (looks for potential, not polish). Another eight places become available in year 9. Odd vacancies come up in other years too so always worth checking. Entrance is by audition for one of the pathways through to GCSE - drama and dance (years 7, 8 and 9) or musical theatre (year 9). Written assessment in maths and English is simply to gauge academic progress - the school is academically non-selective. Biggest entry point is sixth form, when around 300 apply for the 75-ish external places. Candidates are auditioned for one of the two pathways – BTEC level 3 extended diploma in performing arts (acting, dance or musical...

Please note: Independent schools frequently offer IGCSEs or other qualifications alongside or as an alternative to GCSE. The DfE does not record performance data for these exams so independent school GCSE data is frequently misleading; parents should check the results with the schools.
