Free of charge for your charges?

For families resident in the European Union or possessing EU passports, British state schools provide a popular and cost effective means of educating your children in the UK. (www.gov.uk/browse/visas-immigration)

The majority of schools are day schools but particularly useful are the 36 state boarding schools in the UK which provide for families who can demonstrate a boarding need.

British schools - state boarding

Tuition at state boarding schools is free; day pupils do not incur any charges. If you opt for a boarding place then you will be expected to pay for room and board (roughly £9,000 per year at present significantly less than the price of boarding schools in the private sector).

Some of the state boarding schools are comprehensive with no selection on the basis of academic ability (though they may look at suitability to board) while others are extremely choosy. One such (reviewed by The Good Schools Guide) is the Hockerill Anglo-European School in Bishop's Stortford north of London, which specialises in languages and is a popular choice with youngsters from the continent. Hockerill was the first school in England to offer the International Baccalaureate and, although it attracts mainly British pupils, a good number are overseas boarders.

Hockerill currently receives five applications for every available place in the school.

British schools - state day

British SchoolsSome EU pupils come to the UK to study in 'normal' British state schools (no boarding facilities). German youngsters, in particular, have a tradition of studying for a spell in the UK. Some come for only six months or a year, but others find it easier and cheaper to complete a two-year A level course rather than slogging through the German system's three-year preparation for university entrance. Check with the German university you are hoping to attend to make sure they will accept A levels if you are thinking of following this route-not all do.

The Good Schools Guide Education Consultants can help you with your choice of school and advise you on the admissions process but they cannot guarantee you a place in a state school. We know of one trusted consultant who specialises in helping EU pupils to secure places as day pupils in British state schools and organises home-stay arrangements with local families.

On this website we have primary schools for children aged 5 to 11 and secondary schools for those aged 11-18. There are though many variations including grammar schools, which have selective entry at age 11 and faith schools where followers of a particular faith may take priority when it comes to admissions.

  • Special educational needs

Some special needs are easy to spot, others are only determined once a child has experienced considerable difficulties, frustrations or social and emotional problems.  Over the years, diagnosis of and provision for SEN have improved, but both can still be a minefield. Identifying different kinds of special educational needs Few children fit a condition perfectly – if they do, we tend to say they are a ‘classic’ case. Most will not be straightforward: perhaps a dyslexic with dyspraxia and a touch of ADD, or a child with ASD who also has Down’s syndrome. Just as special needs are hard to…

  • Finding a state grammar school

Counties such as Kent or Buckinghamshire are ‘selective authorities’ and most families will have at least one grammar school close to where they live. Elsewhere, for example in Reading or Kingston-on-Thames, there are just one or two grammar schools and competition for places at these is ferocious. How to find a state grammar school Grammar schools are located in 36 English local authorities. Almost half of these are considered 'selective authorities' (eg Kent and Buckinghamshire), where around one in five local children are selected for grammar school entry based on ability. The others are areas such as Barnet or Kingston,…

  • Schools for children with performing arts talents

They're smarter than anyone else's, funnier, certainly more attractive, better behaved and above all bursting with the kind of talent that would leave Daniel Radcliffe, Jamie Bell and Charlotte Church standing. And for some extraordinary - though totally understandable - reason, everyone but us seems blind to our offspring's God-given artistic gifts.
