Students and staff alike praise the ‘close-knit, community feel’. The individual attention is exceptional; for many who didn’t thrive in a bigger school setting, it is life-changing. ‘Phenomenal’ arts and textiles provide a welcome splash of colour in the Young Street building, housed in a busy pair of studios crammed with impressive work (we loved a dramatic display of silhouette lampshades), music playing as a battery of sewing machines were pressed into action to make costumes for the revue. What the school says...

Quality but expensive college located in the heart of Kensington, London. Class sizes never exceed ten. Offers a wide range of subjects with great flexibility in subject combinations. Can organise accommodation in local hostels and host families although not a boarding school.

Since 1981, Mike Kirby BApSc MSc. Raised and educated in and around Toronto, with a degree in aerospace engineering and astrophysics. He became a maths teacher because he was ‘entirely unsuited to the aerospace engineering profession’ and still teaches A level. Worked for MPW in his early 30s before founding Ashbourne. Dry, urbane sense of humour and strong views on educational policy.
