What the school says...
The Liverpool Blue Coat School is a mixed selective school for students from 11-18, which converted to Academy status on 1st March 2012. It is over 300 years old so is rich in tradition yet is forward-looking in ideas and technology. The School Curriculum has an academic focus yet there are many events and activities which make The Blue Coat School experience very exciting and rewarding.
The School admits 120 students into Year 7 (from September 2015 the School will admit 150 students) irrespective of gender, based on the outcome of the School's Entrance Test, for those transferring from Year 6 Primary School to Year 7 Secondary School.
The School's Open Evening for Year 7 Admissions is held at the beginning of July each year.
The Blue Coat School Sixth Form is the largest in the city, with 200 students in the current Year 12 and over 180 in Year 13; There are over 20 A level courses to choose from. Details of the A level courses can be found in the Sixth Form Handbook, downloadable from the School website from 23 January 2015.
Entry requirements: All students must attain a minimum of 5 GCSEs grades A*-B including grade A*-B in English (either English Language or English Literature) and Maths.

If there are more applicants to a school than it has places for, who gets in is determined by which applicants best fulfil the admissions criteria.
Admissions criteria are often complicated, and may change from year to year. The best source of information is usually the relevant local authority website, but once you have set your sights on a school it is a good idea to ask them how they see things panning out for the year that you are interested in.
Many schools admit children based on distance from the school or a fixed catchment area. For such schools, the cut-off distance will vary from year to year, especially if the school give priority to siblings, and the pattern will be of a central core with outliers (who will mostly be siblings).
