Special Education Needs
Bennerley Fields School provides day education for pupils between 2 and 16 years old. The school is divided into three departments: the diagnostic and assessment nursery, the junior and senior school. Pupils assessed in the nursery subsequently attend a variety of schools at the age of 5 years. We cater for pupils with moderate and severe learning difficulties including Autism, speech and language difficulties, visual and/or hearing impairment and BESD. Assessment of a wide range of complex needs takes place in the nursery, particularly language and communication. The school provides the full national curriculum including the foundation stage and has recently received a School Achievement Award for standards achieved. The school has the Basic Skills Quality Mark award which acknowledges the good core curriculum. The Derbyshire Anti-Bullying Commitment award confirmed the school's good practice, which Ofsted praised. Senior pupils work towards externally accredited schemes, achieving very good results; the school is one of a few special schools nationally to be Careermark accredited. Pupils leave the school at the end of Key Stage 4 and go on to a range of further education or work related opportunities. The school prioritises the five key themes in Every Child Matters; furthering these also in initiatives such as Health Promoting Schools and the schools award scheme. In 2006 Ofsted said: 'Bennerley Fields is a good school where the pupils find learning very enjoyable'. We are an Investor in People school.

If there are more applicants to a school than it has places for, who gets in is determined by which applicants best fulfil the admissions criteria.
Admissions criteria are often complicated, and may change from year to year. The best source of information is usually the relevant local authority website, but once you have set your sights on a school it is a good idea to ask them how they see things panning out for the year that you are interested in.
Many schools admit children based on distance from the school or a fixed catchment area. For such schools, the cut-off distance will vary from year to year, especially if the school give priority to siblings, and the pattern will be of a central core with outliers (who will mostly be siblings). Schools that admit on the basis of academic or religious selection will have a much more scattered pattern.
