Special Education Needs

At Thomas Alleyne's all students follow a mainstream curriculum. We believe in giving all students access to all subjects, but realise that some may require support in order to take part in, or meet the requirements for particular subjects. Support is provided in a variety of ways. These include: teaching assistants in lessons; one-to-one literacy tuition; nurture groups; visits from specialist outside agencies; alphasmart laptops for recording work; homework club; social club; one-to-one revision sessions etc. We have close links with the Autism Outreach team and host regular support groups run by a teacher for the hearing impaired and a speech therapist. We currently hold the Basic Skills Quality mark and run literacy and numeracy clubs for students who have difficulties in one of these areas. We also have Dyslexia Friendly status level 1 and are working towards achieving full accreditation. This means ensuring that all staff are regularly updated in Dyslexia Friendly teaching techniques and ensuring that all of our classrooms are Dyslexia Friendly.

If there are more applicants to a school than it has places for, who gets in is determined by which applicants best fulfil the admissions criteria.

Admissions criteria are often complicated, and may change from year to year. The best source of information is usually the relevant local authority website, but once you have set your sights on a school it is a good idea to ask them how they see things panning out for the year that you are interested in.

Many schools admit children based on distance from the school or a fixed catchment area. For such schools, the cut-off distance will vary from year to year, especially if the school give priority to siblings, and the pattern will be of a central core with outliers (who will mostly be siblings). Schools that admit on the basis of academic or religious selection will have a much more scattered pattern.
