What the school says...

We provide individualised care and education programmes for children and young people aged 11 to 19 years, with severe learning disabilities and challenging behaviour.

We are able to offer a range of placement options including:

Day Placements
52 weeks residential – Full residential care; our sites are registered children’s homes
38 week residential – Part time residential care
39 to 51 week residential – where there is a need to provide additional residential support to meet the needs of the young person and their family

Our facilities and collective knowledge and expertise enable us to guide our youngsters through long term programmes of formal and informal education and development.

We encourage all our children and young people to develop a positive self image, promoting their ability to express their personal preferences through informed choice. This develops confidence enabling people to realise their full potential and grow into happy and healthy adults.

What makes us unique?
The curriculum supports students’ individual learning and development by closely matching it to their needs.
On-going formative assessment ensures learning is challenged and extended.
Through understanding and observing each student’s development and learning, teachers are able to assess progress and plan for the next steps.
We understand every student is unique, with the potential to learn and become a resilient, capable, confident and self-assured individual.

Please note: Independent schools frequently offer IGCSEs or other qualifications alongside or as an alternative to GCSE. The DfE does not record performance data for these exams so independent school GCSE data is frequently misleading; parents should check the results with the schools.

Special Education Needs

Rowden House is a very special residential school for up to 44 young people aged 11-19 who have severe learning difficulties, combined with difficult and challenging patterns of behaviour. We offer a wealth of resources and expertise. The specific aim is to approach problems in a positive way, thereby enabling each young person to realise their potential and develop into happy and healthy adults, better able to cope with, and integrate into, a conventional social structure. Establishing a safe and stable environment for all pupils provides for a firm foundation for ongoing social and educational progress. With purpose built facilities, collective expertise and unrivalled staffing levels, Rowden House is able to guide every pupil through long term programmes of formal and informal education. Individually tailored programmes of education and care are regularly reviewed to support all the pupils in achieving their highest levels of independence and achievement. In addition to well-equipped classrooms and a fully functional kitchen, Rowden House has specialist ICT and craft design rooms. We also have a white room for sensory stimulation. The youngsters are able to relax and enjoy our ball pool playroom and our leisure barn combines physical education with therapy and relaxation.
