What says..

Parents were unanimous in their enthusiasm for what the school has to offer. In year 7 all pupils produce a piece of academic research with impressively high... Co-curricular programme is extensive and has something for everyone, even an architecture club located, Harry Potter style, in a rather splendid cupboard. Strong sporting reputation, especially for rugby (historic links with Fylde Rugby Club) and hockey

What the school says...

AKS Lytham is a leading co-educational day school for 0–18-year-olds, based on a 35-acre coastal setting in the Lancashire seaside town of Lytham St Annes. With over 300 years of history, AKS was formed by an amalgamation of Arnold School and KEQMS (formerly King Edward VII and Queen Mary School) in 2012.

We support students pursue their passions, achieve their ambitions and thrive in an uncertain world. We live this every day, with excellent teaching, a wide co-curricular offering and exceptional pastoral support.

Our membership to the international network of Round Square schools enables us to deliver a world-class approach to character education and leadership, as well as supporting our students to develop a global mindset.

Examination results are superb: 56% at A*/A and 81% at A*/B for A level and 61% of GCSE grades at 9-7 (3-year average), but our pride extends to the many ways they contribute, whether it is performing on stage, on the sports pitch, in service of others, or elsewhere.

Recent educational quality inspections endorse the quality of provision, with the School rated as ‘Excellent’ in all areas (ISI, 2022) and Nursery rated ‘Outstanding’ (Ofsted, 2023).

What The Good Schools Guide says

Headmaster

Since 2019, David Harrow. Originally from Hertfordshire he is state school educated followed by a degree in mathematics from St Catharine’s College, Cambridge. His teaching career before AKS was at Oakham School where he rose through the ranks to become head of mathematics and ultimately deputy head academic. Calm, assured and clearly a passionate educator, he is a second-generation teacher and eloquent about the reasons he came to AKS. ‘I came to the interview as much as a dad as anything else. In AKS I found a school where we are as happy to educate our children as I am to lead’. Both of his children are in AKS prep school (which he describes as the best he has ever seen) and will move through to seniors in due course. He speaks proudly of...

Special Education Needs

At AKS the special educational needs of our pupils are met through the work of the learning support department and the individual subject/class teachers. We believe that all our students have skills, talents and abilities and as a school we have a responsibility to develop them to the full. Students with SEN are supported as necessary to help them achieve full access to the whole school curriculum. On entry into Year 7 we use information from feeder schools and parents to identify students with SEN. The year group is screened within the first half term and any causes for concern are then further assessed. Any student, regardless of age, can, at any time, be assessed by the head of learning support if there is cause for concern from teachers and/or parents. A variety of assessments are carried out to determine the type of support required. Once assessed a student, if deemed necessary, will follow one of two possible options: receive small group learning support, for 2-2.5 hours per week; or attend a weekly lunchtime study skills clinic (both with specialist teachers). All year 7 and 8 students receive in-class support in English lessons. Each student withdrawn for learning support has an individual education plan which is reviewed on a six monthly basis. Those students who come to us with an EHCP will have this reviewed annually for as long as is deemed necessary. The special educational needs of our pupils include dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, ADHD, and speech and language difficulties.
