Special Education Needs
Penrice Community College is a Comprehensive secondary school with specialist language college status. There are approximately thirteen hundred plus students presently on campus, of which 203 are on the College Record of Need. Of these, 35 are in receipt of a statement, with 69 designated at School Action Plus. The college strongly reflects the local authority's policy of inclusion, the majority of support is carried out within the class-room by a highly motivated team of Teaching Assistants responsible to the Senco. In addition, each faculty has an attached T.A. whose primary responsibility is to support those students at School Action Plus within each subject area. Withdrawal lessons for individual students also take place to promote literacy, numeracy and study skills for many students. OFSTED, January 2004, commented on the strong leadership within the Individual Needs Faculty, also praising the well motivated team of Teaching Assistants, as well as the strong commitment shown towards inclusion. The overall provision for children with special needs was described as very good. The Individual Needs faculty is based within its own suite, and also offers behavioural support in a discrete unit.
