Special Education Needs

The school does not have a SEN unit as such, and is correspondingly not equipped to cope with children with severe SEN problems. However, a number of children at the school do have mild SEN difficulties, and the school has evolved a Learning Support Unit to help these children. The most common difficulty is mild dyslexia. The school has small set sizes and is a small school, and this can be in itself of enormous help to children with some forms of SEN. In academic terms, the school believes that it can help children who can cope with mainstream lessons and teaching techniques, but who benefit with extra backup lessons to supplement and consolidate work covered in mainstream lessons. Children are taken out of specified class lessons and are given one to one tuition in their place. Such lessons are either generally English or Maths lessons. The school is not however resourced to deal with aggressive or disruptive behaviour and such SEN children are not therefore admitted. Where there is uncertainty as to whether a child with SEN is suitable and would benefit from coming to the school, the Headmaster may require a trial period, usually a week or two, before making a final admissions decision.
