There is an enormous number of staff who have a wide range of specialisms - a boon for parents who are bone-tired from trailing around various appointments. Something of a rarity in that there are rather more girls than is usual in residential special schools and Underley Gardens is finding interesting ways to support their development. What the school says...

Located near the market town of Kirkby Lonsdale on the edge of the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales, Underley Garden is an independent special school and children's home. We are specialists in education, care and therapy for young people with autistic spectrum conditions, learning difficulties and other mental health needs.

The school and home provide for young people between the ages of nine to 19. The children's home is rated outstanding by Ofsted. The school was judged to be good with outstanding features at the most recent inspection.

We also provide continuing care through our 19-25 service, Underley Adult Care.

Headteacher

Since 2018 Ms April Boyd BEd. After completing her Primary Teaching degree at Edge Hill University in 2011 April took her first step in a teaching career at Underley Garden School, as KS3-4 teacher, before the school expanded their primary provision, Holly Trees. As leader of Holly Trees, April progressed to Assistant Head Teacher and then to Head of School in 2018. In September 2020 the role was changed to Headteacher.

Entrance

Pupils come from Lancashire, Cumbria, Yorkshire and the north east but there have been some referrals from London too. Many local special schools cater for children with autism and severe learning difficulties but there is a national shortage of places for children who are more able but have complex behaviours. Additional provision is being proposed which is hoped will increase the capacity to 72...
