Special Education Needs
Lexden School has an 18 place Unit for Hearing Impaired children from Nursery to Year 6. We have two qualified Teachers of the Deaf and currently 7 teaching assistants. The children's hearing losses range from moderate to profound and they all have post-aural aids or cochlear implants. We use Total Communication, which embraces Speech, Sign Supported English and British Sign Language. The school has a policy of inclusion - all children are on class rolls and are supported within their class by a teaching assistant with BSL skills. They are also withdrawn to the unit individually or in a small group by the Teacher of the Deaf or teaching assistant for speech and language work, currriculum reinforcement and pre-tutoring. A speech and language therapist and BSL tutor run regular sessions.
