Special Education Needs

We include this comment by GOSH to illustrate the provision children can expect if/when they are admitted to hospital. It is always beneficial, to all parties, to forewarn the child's school of any planned stay in hospital. Content and delivery invariably flexes to meet the needs of the child, with medical needs taking priority. GOSH write: 'the children's school at Great Ormond Street is STRICTLY for in-patients. For in-patients we aim to: *Minimise disruption to a child's schooling by continuing education as normally as the child's medical circumstances permit. *Provide an enriching and enjoyable experience which is suited to the individual. *Make education an integral part of the overall treatment of the child and make the school an essential component of the hospital's provision. We teach all in-patients of school age, plus pupils from 2-19 if they have a statement of Special Educational Need. Priority is given to long-stay patients who are unable to attend their home school. A brochure is available from the hospital detailing educational provision for in-patients.'
