We watched top-drawer teachers at work, immediately alert to any inattentive pupils while keeping everyone perfectly on task. Several struck us as public school calibre, thanks to their education, experience and classroom presence - and full marks to NCS for listing its staff and their backgrounds on their website, something many preps resist. What the school says...

Situated in a leafy corner of the heart of Oxford, the school has been educating boys since 1379 and supplying choristers for New College's internationally-renowned choir. With traditional academic, cultural and sporting strengths, the school prepares pupils for entry and scholarships to local independent schools and major boarding schools.

Headmaster

Since 2019, Dr Matt Jenkinson. Has NCS running through his veins, having joined post-doctorate and risen to the headship via other roles including head of history and deputy head academic. With a degree from Durham, DPhil from Oxford, and master’s degrees in historical research and educational leadership, he’s also widely published, including a series of books distilling Shakespearean plays into more child-friendly versions — used for the annual school production. As deputy head, he led the switch to the assessment based PSB which involves a broader curriculum, and recognition for all subjects and achievements. ‘It was my baby and has been a big focus.
