Special Education Needs
Shepton Mallet Infant School is an inclusive school which welcomes all children. We provide a happy, nurturing environment in which all children's achievements are valued and celebrated. The needs of children who may be experiencing learning, social or emotional difficulties are given a particular priority. These children receive a high level of support from a very experienced team. The SENCO ensures that the school receives advice from the appropriate agencies, such as the Specific Literacy (Dyslexia) team, or the Speech and Language Therapist; and works closely with the senior Speech and Language Therapist to set programmes and targets for children with speech and language difficulties. These are carried out by trained teaching assistants and are regularly monitored and reviewed. We have built an expertise within the school in successfully including children with Asperger's Syndrome, and in supporting children with emotional difficulties. We have been praised for our work with children for whom English is an additional language. We have set up English Language teaching groups in addition to successful strategies within each class with the support of the SENCO. In addition to specialist provision such as Forest School Sessions, Nurture Club, Language Groups, Provision for Children with Asperger's, English as a second language, the school offers a wide range of enrichment activities.
