What the Academy does better than anything is cement the building blocks of education. Though the national curriculum is largely followed, once official targets have been met, teachers and pupils are free to explore above and beyond, with extracurricular subjects like algebra – ‘useful for analysing problems and thinking mathematically’ – added to the mix. Happiness and wellbeing, too, have always been the bedrock of an Academy education, with even Ofsted indulging in superlatives. (‘Personal development is superb.’) ‘They’re really good at seeing the children and knowing who they are,’ said one mother. ‘They develop them emotionally and academically and tenderly.’

Joint principals: Garth Evans BA and Chloe Sandars LRAM, Prof Cert FTCL founded the school in 1997. Mrs Sandars attended Oxford High School for Girls before studying piano at the Royal Academy of Music and postgraduate training at Trinity College of Music. She then played professionally while teaching part time. Mr Evans, whose great-grandfather accompanied Captain Scott to the Antarctic, was educated at Falkner House, Westminster School and Queen Mary College, London, where he read English. He started tutoring privately at the age of 16.
