Pupils have personalised spaces in their form classroom then move to different subject specialist areas and teachers. However lots of flexibility around this - 'Some students struggle with the sensory element of going into food tech, but we can bring food tech to them’. Drum kits in rooms throughout school are used as both a learning tool and to self-soothe. The schools' investment in £10,000 worth of professional music recording equipment in its own sound booth reflects the its commitment to music. High Grange School is a specialist school for children and young people with autism and associated learning, communication, sensory and behavioural difficulties, between the ages of eight to 19 years. High Grange School is a purpose-built ASC school, with a low eco-footprint and is situated in a safe and tranquil, semi rural setting with excellent transport links. The school has been specifically designed to address the needs of children and young people with ASC and its environment provides the security, structure and predictability in which they can grow and learn. We make use of current research and evidence based practices to develop a highly individualised timetable which will include a wide range of academic and vocational study, therapy, offsite education and enrichment activities.
The school has a primary school style model between the ages of eight and 14 years that allows for a nurturing approach to help children settle and grow into the school. The school has an extensive curriculum with a wide range of specialist teachers who can deliver a specialised programme of study tailored to individual student needs. In post-14 and post-16 students have the opportunity to access a secondary style curriculum that offers accreditation at entry level, functional skills, BTec, GCSE and A level. The school also has a strong multi-disciplinary team which includes speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, clinical psychology, full time parent liaison officer and full time school nurse, a trained counsellor, pastoral teacher, a specialist dyslexia and dyscalculia tutor and a therapy assistant. The school has excellent modern facilities with specialist rooms for art and design, food technology, design technology wood and metal, science, ICT and music. Since 2017, Gavin Spicer. Steeped in SEN for 19 years, initially teaching PE and modern history. Previously at Horizon School (now known as Rugeley school) for autism and severe learning difficulties. Quickly identified as an emerging leader and nominated onto Priory Group's fast track programme, supporting the school to outstanding. Joined High Grange early 2011 as deputy head and was part of the senior management team responsible for developing and setting up the school ready to open in September 2011. Says he feels fortunate to work at High Grange as they make such a difference to students' and families' lives. Regular visits from ex-pupils are the norm.
