They met on a bus in Beijing and found they shared a passion for the teaching of Mandarin (they both introduced compulsory teaching of Mandarin in their schools) as well as rigorous academic learning and a desire for social justice. Students here develop an easy confidence accompanied by a sense that they can do anything they set their sights on.
