Parents praise the personalised teaching style - ‘it feels like every teacher is very invested in getting absolutely the best from each boy,’ said one. Formal preparation for 11+ ramps up in year 5 and there’s an optional week-long summer school in the holidays. All pupils have weekly enrichment sessions - stop motion animation, drama, geology etc. Year 5s and 6s also have weekly classes in performance and presentation skills (games like Just a Minute pay dividends at senior school interviews). Head master

Since January 2022, Nick Vernon, previously head at Newcastle-under-Lyme Prep for 13 years and before that deputy head at Stockport Grammar for seven years. Grew up in nearby Bramhall, where he ‘always wanted to teach’. Degree in sports science from Liverpool Poly, PGCE and master’s in primary education from Manchester Metropolitan University. After eight years teaching in state schools, his first job in the independent sector was at Altrincham Prep – has now ‘come home.’ Is also an inspector for ISI.
