What the school says...

Barnard Castle School is a happy, thriving HMC day and boarding school. There are 476 pupils in the Senior School, of whom 118 are boarders and enjoy a full boarding programme, rated ‘Excellent' by ISI in 2016.

The School is situated in its own extensive grounds on the outskirts of an historic market town, recently noted as being the safest in England, in an area of outstanding beauty. The School is well resourced and enjoys an enviable reputation for its pupils achievements on a broad variety of fronts.

We believe that all our children have something to offer, and we are driven by a desire to find areas where each of them can excel. Every term we offer an extensive programme of over 100 extra-curricular activities to which all members of the Common Room contribute.

The Senior School opened its Sixth Form Centre in Autumn 2015.

Headmaster

Since September 2024, David Cresswell, previously senior deputy head at Whitgift School, Croydon. This is not his first time at the school – he was deputy head (sixth form) here from 2017-2020. Before that, he taught MFL and theatre studies at his alma mater, Cranleigh School, before moving to Radley College as head of German and deputy housemaster. He is a graduate in modern languages from Oxford University, where he captained the university hockey team, winning his Blue four times over. A keen theatregoer and former professional hockey player in Germany and England, he is joined by his wife, Aynsley, a GP, and their two young children, Olivia and Alexander.
