All-through school (for example 3-18 years). - An all-through school covers junior and senior education. It may start at 3 or 4, or later, and continue through to 16 or 18. Some all-through schools set exams at 11 or 13 that pupils must pass to move on.

Since 2021, Laura Comerford, previously 11 years at Bute House having taught for 20 years in the UK and Malaysia. Started teaching career in Brighton and ‘jumped at the chance to move back’, but admits that ‘starting the job in a pandemic was not easy’. Didn’t set out to work in single-sex education, but now ‘sees the benefits of a girls-only system’.
Pip, the school’s therapy dog, leaps off head’s lap and greets us as we enter her office. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming: it’s clear Ms Comerford feels very at home two years in. A poster on her office wall reads, ‘Don’t be a Lady, be a Legend’, and sets the tone.
