Since 2012, Dr Sally Powell BA (Royal Holloway), PGCE, MPhil, DPhil (Oxon). Charming and vivacious, she has been at Collingham for two decades and very much sets a tone of calm, welcoming reason. Raised in Guildford, she had an unconventional educational trajectory, beginning her first degree (in English literature) aged 24. ‘I worked in bar jobs. It gives you a new perspective, and an understanding there’s not just one path.’ Her own route then clearly became focused, and after a PGCE from Oxford and a spell teaching in a state school, she returned to the dreaming spires to complete her Master’s and PhD. While looking for a permanent academic post, she landed at Collingham. ‘I found I was doing university-like teaching with really interesting students and I was hooked.’
