The school’s meadow is the starting point in the morning for the Meadow Mile – eight laps around it is a mile, which pupils might do on foot or on their bikes. In the summer it’s the staging ground for a mini Olympics. Teachers incorporate the pupils’ special interests into their learning, so if it is trains they go out on trains, and for one pupil who is fascinated by reptiles, it’s visits to specialist pet shops and he later relays his knowledge…

Since 2014, Bernadette Casey. Previously head teacher at Milton School in Glasgow for children with complex needs and Parkhill School, Glasgow, for young people with additional learning needs. Originally from Ireland, she took a degree in Russian language and literature at Queens University, and spent her early career in IT roles, before doing postgrad teacher training in her late 20s. She began teaching in mainstream primary, but found her vocation in a school for moderate learning disabilities (Park School in Kilmarnock): ‘In two days I knew it was the place for me,’ she says.
