What says..

There is a ‘fairly traditional ethos,’ say parents (more so than Thomas’s Clapham, the co-ed prep nearby, they told us), but ‘modern in terms of learning’. Parents praise the ‘inclusivity’ of the approach, with less able pushed to do their best and play to their strengths as well as the more able. The head stresses the importance of high-level teaching in humanities, languages and science, ensuring they are not crowded out of the curriculum by the emphasis on English and maths (which has dominated preps and primaries in recent years). ‘There is always something that challenges us in lessons,’ one boy told us, while parents say that ‘expectations are high’. What the school says...

Mrs Sarah Segrave, Eaton House The Manor Head and Group Principal, is very visible as the centre of life at Eaton House Schools, ensuring that they continue in the fine tradition of a perfectly-balanced offering of excellent academics, good value added, a strong community, and, consequently, a school where boys deliver their best in all fields, ably supported by their parents. She upholds the

philosophy that staff should make a difference every day, whether by teaching in an inspired way or by nurturing every boy to achieve his chosen senior school. Her carefully planned curriculum is adjusted to fit boys’ developmental stages, interests and strengths, creating the best start for each and every pupil. This begins in the Pre-Prep where learning is active, academic and exploratory.

Mrs Segrave takes up the baton at age 8 from the Pre-Prep’s Cambridge-educated Headmaster, Mr David Wingfield, who joined the school in September 2020 and who enjoys the responsibility of transforming the smallest 4-year-olds into enthusiastic lifelong learners. A mathematics specialist, he has been hailed as one of ‘the most motivated teachers’ that the Tatler Schools Guide (2021) has ever met.

Mrs Segrave and Mr Wingfield are completely united on the importance of pastoral care. As Mrs Segrave puts it, it is ‘the fundamental cornerstone of the school.’ Both heads are encouraging, involved, and radiate a ‘can-do’ sunniness that inspires all the boys to have a go and get involved, not just the extroverts and high achievers. As a result, they aim for everyone to have their moment to shine, blossoming as their confidence grows.

What The Good Schools Guide says

Headmistress

Since 2016, Sarah Segrave. Educated at Cranbrook School in Kent and has a BA in education and history from Durham University and an MA from the UCL Institute of Education. A founding member of staff, having joined as a history and Latin teacher when the school opened in 1993 as a ‘bright-eyed and bushy-tailed 22-year-old.’ By 2001, she was the head of the boys’ pre-prep before taking a break to have children, returning in 2010 to put rocket boosters under the new girls’ school, which shares the same site.

She says it has been ‘fascinating’ to be there for the entire evolution of the school and feels like ‘the guardian of that school spirit’ as she watches new generations of boys come to the same school that their dads went to....
