Special Education Needs
Learning support is offered on the recommendation of the class teacher to children of all age groups in the Kindergarten and the primary school. Learning support is provided in the subjects of the class curriculum in order to alleviate learning difficulties through short-term, targeted assistance. This support is delivered during normal teaching time in the classroom, or if necessary, also on a one-to-one basis, whilst ensuring that no teaching time is lost in the relevant subject area. The children receiving learning support receive an individual learning plan, which identifies their strengths and weaknesses, as well as a programme for overcoming their difficulties. After approximately six months, the progress of the individual student is discussed with parents, class teacher and deputy headteacher, and future objectives agreed. In Years 3, 4 and 5 in the primary school, children who are having problems with the foreign language can have extra tuition in the language on Wednesday afternoons – outside of normal teaching hours. On the recommendation of either the language teacher or the class teacher, in agreement with the parents, a specific programme of extra tuition can be organised for a six-month period.
