Special Education Needs

The primary aim of Garnock Academy is that every pupil receives an appropriate education which is both challenging and attainable. In that respect pupil support is integral to all teaching and learning and is the responsibility of all those involved: the LEA, school staff, education support services, appropriate external agencies, parents and the pupil. The fact that a pupil is referred to the pupil support department simply means that at a particular time they are experiencing a difficulty which requires additional support. We have the facility to cater for a wide range of educational needs, supporting effective teaching and learning across the curriculum. The pupil support department will aim to meet those needs through a variety of different strategies namely: *Differentiation of the curriculum, resources and teaching strategies *Consultancy support/staff development for other members of staff *Cooperative or team teaching * Tutorial support, either within the classroom, 1-1 or small group *1-1 counselling behaviour management programmes * Flexibile/alternative curriculum plannning *ASDAN target setting and monitoring of pupil progress through tthe use of IEPs where appropriate *Involvement of appropriate external agencies *On-going communication with parents
