What says..

A lot at Knighton happens in fresh air. They play outside in their dens, make up games with bits of sticks, climb trees and converse with ponies, goats, hamsters etc. We watched them at it. A delight. What they (arguably) do best indoors is sing. The music-making tradition here is as old as the ponies. Overnighting and weekending joyously popular because the boarding staff are lovely and make it such fun, and the head of boarding is a force of nature...

What the school says...

Set in 30 acres of Dorset countryside, the freedom to explore and engage with the landscape is an everyday matter at Knighton House. A warm and nurturing ethos reliably delivers superb academic results; leavers go on to Bryanston, Canford, Clayesmore, Godolphin, Sherborne Girls and St Mary’s Calne; Year 8s are regularly awarded Art, Music, Sport, Creative Arts and Academic scholarships.

In 2019, Knighton House pioneered a departure from all subjects at Common Entrance, writing its own curriculum and delivering upon its new mantra of ‘how you learn, not just what you learn’. Expect to hear staff saying that ‘learning dispositions’ are the rock on which the new curriculum is founded; if you want optimism, resilience, curiosity and self-awareness numbered in your child’s box of behaviours; this is the school for you.

Knighton House is renowned for its exceptionally high standards and high take-up in the creative arts; sporting achievement is highly valued and the recent move to co-education has bought about opportunities to fully access its bigger neighbour’s facilities and expertise. Well-known also is its passion for riding – in the day, riding lessons alternate between academic lessons; they offer schooling in the menage, a cross-country course, and miles upon miles of bridle paths on the boundary.

What The Good Schools Guide says

Acting head

Helen Dominey, formerly school's deputy head.

Entrance

Non-selective. Come any time so long as there’s room. Invariably an ongoing swelling of numbers by children unhappy at their present school. Taster days. Scholarships. Bursaries (Greenwood Awards) for families who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford it. Parents local, Forces and expats. Not much of an ethnic mix, this being Dorset, but it wouldn’t be an issue in the slightest. Always a horizon-broadening contingent from Spain, France, Italy, Belgium.

Now co-ed, so school is accepting up to and include year 6 as day pupils. This will be extended to years 7 and 8 from September 2021.
