The woodland school is popular – an outdoor forested area backing onto Bruntwood Park. The children adore jumping in the stream, climbing trees, using the bug hotel and getting muddy – all part of the school’s diverse approach to learning. Once a week, every class has a longer lesson here to learn about the different types of plants and animals in the area. Headmistress

Since September 2021, Louise Higson, previously head of Farlington since 2012, having joined the school seven years earlier. Grew up in Cheshire, maths degree from Manchester University. Still teaches year 5 maths once a week.

Has made a big impression. Parents called her ‘progressive, inclusive and forward thinking,’ and say she is an active member of the school community: ‘She stands at the school gate every morning, rain or shine, to greet everyone – she really goes above and beyond,’ said one.

The walls of her high-ceilinged but welcoming office are proudly adorned with neatly framed art projects made by the students – she tells us about them with pride. Outside, we spotted excited infant students jumping up to try and to peep through the window....
