What the school says...

Langley Preparatory School at Taverham Hall, originally founded in 1921, is a co-educational IAPS and ISA day and flexi/weekly boarding school set in 100 acres of beautiful woodland conveniently situated near Norwich whilst also offering extensive school transport covering Norfolk and Suffolk for those living further afield. Scholarships are available for children aged 7 to 11 in the areas of music, sport, academic and art and open mornings take place in each term.

The school was recently awarded the NACE Challenge Award for its outstanding provision for more able pupils. The high standards achieved by pupils are recognised by both senior schools and inspection teams. Since 2010 the school has received four outstanding inspection reports. There is a firm educational focus on the individual and personalised learning along with a commitment to small class sizes. Pupils are offered exciting performance opportunities in music and drama as well as 4–5 hours each week of PE and Games lessons including weekly sporting fixtures, termly tournaments and competitions at local, regional and national level. The school’s Gold Schools Games Mark, Healthy Schools Award and Good Diabetes Care in School Award all demonstrate the importance the school places on emotional health and well-being.

The school is dedicated to providing outstanding pastoral care combined with personalised, academic learning programmes and investigative hands-on Forest School experiences. The school offers a breadth of opportunities together with a focus on how children learn rather than simply what they learn. Inspiring teaching staff identify learning styles, set personalised targets and tailor teaching to the individual, ensuring that each child has every opportunity to achieve their personal best. Through small classes and individual academic guidance and a carefully thought out PSHEE program, pupils are encouraged to analyse their strengths and target their weaknesses.

Specialist teachers throughout the school ensure children flourish in the school’s vibrant, warm and friendly atmosphere. Pupils are heard to read every day in the Pre-Prep department whilst pupils in the Nursery and Reception classes follow a bespoke curriculum which draws on the strengths of the Early Years curriculum whilst crucially offering children, who are ready, the opportunity to read and write at a younger age and to develop their mathematical skills beyond the current levels of expectation. The introduction of this bespoke curriculum has only been possible as a result of the school’s excellent inspections including an ‘outstanding’ grading from Ofsted – the basis on which the school has been allowed to exit the EYFS framework whilst maintaining the funding. This is a fabulous time for the school to build on such solid foundations.

High pupil achievements contribute to the school’s excellent record for when Year 8 pupils move to senior school as well as obtaining senior school scholarships each year.

As pupils approach Year 8 and Scholarship examinations, there is a greater move towards independence. Pupils take increased responsibility for their learning and conduct, as well as obtaining leadership roles within the school, including Prefect status and mentoring Year 3 pupils when in Year 8. Both the school’s Council and Boarders’ Forum provide pupils with a voice and an opportunity to play an active role in the school’s community as well as enhancing ways in which pupils can communicate with staff and the school in general. In their top two years pupils are taught life skills which culminate in an exciting post-Common Entrance programme with a clear focus on fun, adventure and teamwork.

What the parents say...

Our eldest son joined Taverham Hall in September 2007, after a frustrating and demoralising time at his previous school. From the moment he entered the school his enthusiasm and motivation returned and he soon began to reach his potential. Although being a year younger than his peers, he quickly made friends with children across the school, something which is not evident in the majority of state schools. His academic achievement has been outstanding which is a credit to each and every member of Management, teaching and pastoral staff. The extra-curricular opportunities that he has are abounding and the dedication and enthusiasm with which these are delivered is inspirational. The care and individual attention to each child has lead to our son becoming a polite, confident and articulate young man. Having made the difficult decision to remove him at the end of Year 6 and enrol him at a local State boarding school, we soon realised this was a huge mistake. He was welcomed back to Taverham Hall as though he had never been away and all the staff contributed to his successful return. We happily enrolled out youngest into Year 4 this year and have noticed the motivation and enthusiasm that he is developing to learning and the passion to extend his knowledge and achievements. In a nutshell Taverham Hall is a truly inspiring place set in an amazing landscape with friendly, creative and inspirational staff - A real Gem in Norfolk!!

Our son joined Taverham Hall into Reception and has, so far, enjoyed 6 happy years there. We have watched him grow in confidence and enthusiasm. He has made wonderful, strong friendships, which have the potential to last for life. He enjoys his learning and is always keen to share his daily experiences. The school is a success because of the wonderful, courteous staff working in an astonishing environment. How many children can see grouse, pheasant, fox and deer in the course of a day? The staff know the children well and celebrate their cultural background, bringing it into the curriculum. Children benefit from Forest School and a wide range of after school activities. They develop into confident, polite individuals. An active Friends committee (PTA) arranges events for the whole family, ensuring that there is an extended community feeling. A truly wonderful place for pupils and parents alike.

Both our children are at Taverham Hall and thoroughly enjoy every minute of the day. The atmosphere is very warm, friendly and welcoming and there is always something going on which makes going to school exciting every single day. We're not sure many schools can boast that! The leadership of the school is strong and there is a real sense of purpose and direction that is almost visible as you enter the grounds. There is also a belief that every child has a gift and the staff excel at nurturing each individuals talent, getting every child to realise their full potential - be that on the sporting field, in the music room or academically. The forest school status the school has is fantastic, allowing the children to make the most of the grounds that surround the school. But, most of all, the children themselves are great ambassadors for the school - reflecting the very high standards set by all the staff - and no matter what challenges they face they always try their very hardest. Wherever they go they always leave a lasting impression and seem to be held in the highest regard by the various senior schools we visit. We are extremely happy with how both our children have progressed and would never hesitate to recommend the school to any prospective parents.

While I cannot fault the academic education my children received from Taverham Hall, I remain forever impressed and grateful with the pastoral care the school gave them. Children who pass through the influence of the school’s Heads, teachers, pastoral and support staff leave Taverham Hall with a quiet confidence. A confidence that is never ‘cocky’ or overly self-assured, but one grounded in the belief that their voice is worthy of being heard. Couple that with a fierce regard for what others also have to say, and you have the magic that is the school community of Taverham Hall. I was particularly grateful for the school’s caring but unshakeable structure when my children’s father died unexpectedly. After such a catastrophic event in a young life, some things need to stay the same. When they returned after their hiatus, Taverham Hall’s expectations of the children were not allowed to slip, and it is this loving but firm anchor which got them through some very difficult days. My children look back at their ‘old school’ with love and the fondest of memories, having taken with them the Taverham Hall charisma and confidence to try new ventures. I could not have wished for a better start in life for my children.

It is difficult to put into words the profound influence that Taverham Hall has had on the lives of my three children. My eldest started at Taverham Hall School five year ago in the Prep School. He was shy and had struggled to make friends in his previous school often feeling awkward and that he didn’t fit in, his unhappiness encouraged us to look at alternatives schools. With one open day visit we were sold on the warm friendly atmosphere, the beautiful grounds and state of the art technology and teaching methods used within the school. We moved him immediately and within weeks of being at Taverham Hall his outlook on life and his education changed, he had made friends and couldn’t stop talking about his lessons and all the exciting things he was doing. He embraced life at Taverham Hall and has been extremely happy; he is about to move onto his first choice senior school with an academic scholarship as a well rounded and intelligent young man, who has strong moral beliefs and confidence in his ability. Our second son shortly followed his brother to Taverham Hall where his learning difficulties and special educational needs were quickly identified and individual learning plans put into place. Every teacher was promptly made aware that he needed a slightly different approach and his lessons are tailored to meet his individual needs. He is now performing well in all his lessons and his successes on the sports field are encouraged and celebrated by the school. Our daughter joined Pre Prep in year one and had 2 fantastic years with enthusiastic and energetic teachers before moving onto the Prep School this year. She scored exceptionally well in her SATS at the end of year two and in now also thriving in the Prep School. I cannot recommend Taverham Hall highly enough. The teachers are hard working and dedicated to each and every child’s education and strive to ensure they fulfil their full potential. The pastoral care is exceptional and every child feels cared for and safe in their environment. The facilities are excellent and the Forest School learning is enjoyed by everyone, who wouldn’t want to build dens in the woods and play amongst the trees? I believe the education that my children are receiving at Taverham Hall is second to none. I have three confident, grounded and above all HAPPY children who love their school and cannot wait to get there each day.

Our five year old son started in Reception and as parents we are very delighted to have made the right decision. The Headmaster was very helpful and approachable. The school brings out the best in every child and our son’s confidence is growing day by day. The teachers are very well qualified and experienced. It is so good to see that our son’s gifts and abilities are channelled very creatively and enthusiastically in the classroom and outside. It is very reassuring to see the teachers take a special interest in the all round development of every child. There is a good balance of children in his class, and most importantly manners and behaviour are highly emphasized helping the children to thrive and grow. The school provides acres of space for a range of sports and activities and my son can’t wait to take part in cricket and hockey. The Forest school, afterschool activities, sports and games and the classroom learning all go hand in hand. As parents having grown up in two different countries and having experienced a range of some fantastic schools, we must say that Taverham Hall offers a real outstanding atmosphere for children to learn, grow and flourish in a safe, caring and loving environment- and that’s very reassuring.

Our son moved to Taverham Hall School at Year 6. We have found it to be an outstanding school. The students take pride in the school and are extremely well mannered. The facilities are exceptional, with stunning grounds for the children to play in and explore through the forest school. There is a purpose built music block with the opportunity to learn any instrument and participate in the highly acclaimed choir. The standard of teaching is high, the staff are very caring, and students and teachers have a good relationship. The extra help children receive is exceptional. After school activities are varied each term and cover a wide range to accommodate as many children as possible, ranging from canoeing and fishing to book clubs, rock band, ICT, and many others. The school has flexi-boarding which enables children to experience boarding without a full time commitment. Many different activities are on offer for the boarding community from cooking nights, swimming parties, movie nights to outings to the BBC and bowling. The Friends Association play an active part within the school and provide social events throughout the year for both the children and parents. The school provides so much in Years 7 and 8, allowing the children to grow and flourish in their final years. We are sad to be leaving the school at the end of this year but know that our son (and us) will have many fond memories of Taverham.

5 happy years have already passed at Taverham Hall from nursery to pre-prep. The attraction of Taverham Hall include the beautiful grounds, facilities, variety of activities but above all the caring nature of the teachers. Both our children love going to school and are happy there which is the most important factor for us. There is a great atmosphere at the school due to a fantastic relationship between the children and teachers but also the parent teacher relationship. The balance between academic and extra-curricular activities is perfect. Our main reason and the major strength of this school is the quality and experience of the teachers. We would highly recommend this school without reservation.

We have had a long association with the school and currently have 3 boys attending both the pre-prep and prep school. The school has a genuine interest to unlock the potential of every child and has a strong ethos to treat every child as an individual. It offers a terrific variety of different academic and non-academic activities both within the school day and after, providing as many opportunities as possible for your child to flourish. Everyone is made to feel very welcome and the parent community is very strong. The school is set in glorious parkland facilitating forest school initiatives as well as outdoor play with zip wires, tree climbing and canoeing in the summer term. The school is going from strength to strength and is growing every year. We are extremely happy with how our children are progressing .

This summer our youngest of 3 children will leave Taverham Hall, ending our family's 15 year association with the school. In that time there have inevitably been many changes, including the retirement of the Headmaster who had presided over the school for 12 of our 15 years, and several of the senior staff. Despite the changes, the ethos and standards of the school remain traditional and sound, producing polite and well mannered children. Situated in acres of beautiful parkland and woods, good use is made of the surroundings for both teaching and play. Teaching and pastoral care is excellent and motivational from a caring and friendly teaching staff. Academically the school performs well achieving good scholarship results. It suffers a little sometimes on the sporting side from being relatively small in numbers, but at least almost every pupil ends up in a team which often produce surprisingly good results against larger schools! All three of our children have flourished at Taverham Hall, and have enjoyed thoroughly their time there. As a family, we are extremely pleased with the "end product" from Taverham Hall School.
