What the parents say...

Littlegarth is a real gem of a school with a dedicated teaching staff under the brilliant Head, Peter Jones. We have had three children there all the way through from Nursery to Year 6, and have been delighted with all aspects of it. There is an ethos of achievement, good manners and kindness which runs through the place, and all of ours have been very happy and made great friends. Educationally it is an over-achiever despite being non-selective: the school is absolutely not a crammer for the Colchester grammars, yet this year for example about 10 pupils out a year group of 38 passed their 11+ plus. Those not going on to the grammars tend to go to RHS, Woodbridge, Ipswich School, Ipswich High etc. Some go on to prep schools if they intend to board from 13+, and if there are early tests for public schools, the school is very helpful. Wherever they go, the children have been well prepared. Besides academics, the sport is very strong and in recent years the school's success has been quite remarkable: it is a recurring feature that teams are frequently unbeaten in a season - this year for example the boys won both the ISA national rugby and football tournaments. It is not down to luck, but rather a fantastic group of sports teachers: every child has been taught good technique, and knows what he/she should be doing. Sport is not just for the elite either: in the Under 11 age groups there are usually A,B,C and D teams. The music is great, too, with many getting music scholarships on to their next schools - children are encouraged to perform frequently in small afternoon recitals, in assemblies, and in larger concerts. The place has a happy, upbeat, feel to it, also one that is more egalitarian than some independent schools. It is set in beautiful surroundings in the Dedham Vale overlooked by the famous Stoke-by-Nayland church - a great place to watch cricket or rounders on a summer afternoon.

Choosing Littlegarth for our son was an easy decision. The school not only offers academic excellence but so much more from Forest School, sport & languages, the list could go on. Our son is now in Year 1 and has settled so well. The wonderful family atmosphere around the school has aided this considerably. Littlegarth has helped him grow into a confident, polite little boy who is willing to attempt anything. The school is inclusive on all levels and there is a real focus on helping the individual child to achieve the best results for themselves. We have found the school to be extremely cooperative and keen to involve parents in all aspects of school life. We see the Headmaster at many school events and he always has time to speak with parents. I am always impressed that he not only knows all the children’s names but also knows what they have been up to as well!

Having had several children at Littlegarth over many years, I can confidently say that they have loved it as much as we have as parents. It lives up to its label as, "A truly independent school" where decisions seem to be made based on good old-fashioned common sense, instinct and human kindness. Led by an extremely popular, hands-on head who really knows his children, Littlegarth is a very close-knit family with a cosy feel and a huge sense of pride in its excellent teachers who so often go that extra mile which makes all the difference. Out of school hobbies and achievements receive touching recognition and admiration in school assemblies so that every child can shine. Excellent, ambitious sports departments ensure that Littlegarth punches way above its weight with repeated success at national level, and its academic results speak for themselves. Music is very popular and both Music and Drama are improving all the time. Of course, not everything is perfect all of the time, but in my experience, any parental concerns or queries are usually given thoughtful and respectful consideration. If I have appealed to any member of staff for particular help or support in in a specific area, it has been unfailingly given. I have no vested interest in this review, simply my love for a school which has delivered all I could have wished for for each of my very different children.

Thank the school

Parents and pupils often have cause to acknowledge the help and support they have received from their schools, for example in helping in the choice of further education or careers. "Say thank you" allows you to send a quick note of appreciation to the school in general or to an individual teacher.

This is a thank you to your school, teacher or careers adviser who helped you to get where you are now.

Please fill in the fields below, which we will transform into a letter of thanks from you to them.

Leave blank if you want to thank the school as a whole

Years you were there

Can be left blank but, if you can, think of a few words that will bring a smile.
