Very traditional school (from the berets and boaters to the emphasis on good manners and fair play) but combined with a forward-looking approach. On the day we visited, the school was awash with happy, sparky children who appeared to be thriving in this caring environment. Wide range of academic ability. ‘As we’re non-selective, we don’t have a certain type of child. Headmaster
Since 2002, Patrick Mattar LRAM MA (early 50s). Degrees in music and education management and administration. Educated in Solihull. Came here in 1989, as head of music, straight from the Royal Academy of Music. This was followed by six years at Wetherby, first as director of music then deputy head. Returned here as headmaster in 2002. Married with two teenage sons and laughs that ‘parenting does not get any easier!’ Wife is director of lower school at Sussex House.
Music is his passion. Performs piano recitals at charity concerts, auctioned off by school. Parents rave about his talent. He admits that practising ‘takes up a lot of time but I enjoy it.’ A keen cyclist.

Special Education Needs
We have a part-time special needs co-ordinator and a part-time speech and language therapist, along with a school counsellor who visits once a week. External agencies are used for support with occupational therapy needs, for example.
