What the school says...
Redland High Junior School is housed in Victorian buildings close to the Senior School, we place due emphasis on ensuring that the girls acquire excellent core skills but also devote time to many extras that are not part of the national curriculum. Standards of music, art and drama are very high indeed. Class sizes are small to ensure each girl gets optimum attention and to enable the girls to express their individuality and know that they are special members of the close-knit community. All-through school (for example 3-18 years). - An all-through school covers junior and senior education. It may start at 3 or 4, or later, and continue through to 16 or 18. Some all-through schools set exams at 11 or 13 that pupils must pass to move on.
What The Good Schools Guide says
During 2016/17, Rachel Hayward, who has been at the school for over 30 years, will oversee the merger with Red Maids' School and the move to its Westbury site.
Non-selective into pre-prep, then NFER tests which are also used to monitor progress. Tests and assessment are done on taster days and parents say once within the doors most want to stay. Numbers practically double from year 4 as state school parents wake up to advantages of getting daughters into senior school via this route and also being in with a chance of a scholarship. Early warning given if any girls unlikely to make grade.
Special Education Needs
Redland High School has a Special Educational Needs Coordinator who works in both the junior and senior schools so that continuity is provided as girls progress. From Year 1 upwards, each girl is assessed on entry to Redland and problems, such as dyslexia, addressed with an individual plan to help her overcome difficulties and achieve her potential. Gifted children are stretched by being set work ahead of their year group and early entrance to public examinations for the most able is common. Further stimulus is provided through the school’s varied programme of extra-curricular activities which includes academic options such as Mandarin. 09-09
