What the school says...

Shapwick School specialises in the education of young people aged 8-19 years with dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia and associated speech and language needs.

Shapwick offers teaching strategies based on a multi-sensory approach using auditory, visual and kinaesthetic methods of curriculum delivery. As a CReSTeD category SP school, support is offered across the entire curriculum within all classroom situations. We were the first school in Britain to be fully accredited by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists. The National Curriculum is modified where appropriate to meet our students needs and be empathetic to the challenges presented by SpLD.

On site Speech and Language Therapy and Occupational Therapy run alongside the above throughout the day, both in and out of the classroom, from KS2 to Sixth Form. Post-16, we equip our students with skills and confidence to succeed in the modern world. Sixth Form courses are delivered by Bridgwater College, a leading tertiary college. Our link with them ensures Sixth Formers enjoy freedom to pursue their career aspirations and also benefit from specialist dyslexia support within Shapwick when they are not in lectures at college.

Since 2014, Mr Adrian Wylie BA BEd NPQH (late 40s), born in Northern Ireland but educated in England: at Bath University for his first degree in business admin, at the now defunct King Alfred’s College (subsumed by the university of Winchester) for his BEd in maths, and at Birmingham for his postgrad diploma in autism.

His early career comprised management experience at Benetton and his own landscape gardening business; he combined this latter stage with some part-time work as a teaching assistant – in the days when ordinary mortals working in non-related fields could do such things. ‘I found kids then who couldn’t do stuff, and particularly maths.
