What says..

Sport is a central plank of the St John’s education, and facilities are truly outstanding, with a multitude of pitches and venues catering for almost any interest. The head modestly describes the outcome as ‘solid’ – ‘We win and lose, it’s nicely balanced.’  Parents see it as level headed and inclusive. What the school says...

St John’s is a thriving, Independent Prep School for boys aged 3-13. Set in a magnificent thirty-five acre estate overlooking London, the School is a wonderful community where aspirational boys enjoy learning and form joyful memories to last a lifetime.

Our unique learning environment allows space for boys to grow and realise their potential. Traditional values of respect and kindness are blended with an innovative approach to teaching and learning; the ethos is both rounded as well as unashamedly academically rigorous.

St John’s rich heritage as part of the Merchant Taylors’ family of schools was recently commemorated in recent centenary celebrations. The appointment of Mr Tom Jenkin (MA Oxon) as Headmaster further deepens these connections: he previously worked for a decade at Merchant Taylors’, and brings ambition and dynamism to the School. He lives locally with his wife and two daughters, and grew up in Pinner, just down the road.

St John’s is a happy, vibrant and successful place where boys’ individual talents are nurtured and the joy of childhood is preserved. Boys who join the school work and play hard: Music, Drama and Sport are flourishing. Talents and passions are encouraged, as is the development of problem-solving skills and a focus on life-long learning habits. The contemporary curriculum and dedicated staff nurture and inspire the boys who love coming to school here..

The School seeks to work with families to develop rounded, resilient boys. We prioritise character development, in addition to the pursuit of academic excellence. Alumni progress smoothly at the end of Year 8 to Merchant Taylors’ School, in addition to a variety of other leading independent schools, depending on what best suits each individual child.

You are warmly invited to visit us in order to see the wealth of opportunities your son can look forward to as they begin their journey towards becoming exceptional young men.

Head

Since September 2022, Mr Tom Jenkin, MA (Oxon). He grew up in Pinner, just down the road from the school, and previously worked for a decade at Merchant Taylors’ (St John’s is part of the Merchant Taylors’ family of schools). He lives locally with his wife and two daughters.

Entrance

About 80 sit for 20 places at 3+, and about 60 for 16 places at 4+. ‘We’re looking for a little something of the St John’s spark,’ says the head. He also wants families ‘happy to commit to the school’, and is ‘a little biased’ in favour of old boys. A further handful of places - 5 or 6 – at 7+, with about 20 applicants. At this point, boys are assessed by written tests and interview ‘to make sure they fit into the cohort’.
