We are an outstanding special school that caters for children with Autism, MLD, SLD and other associated complex needs. Additionally some children have ADD, Fragile X, Downs Syndrome, Williams Syndrome, or Dyspraxia. A Specialist School in the SEN area of Comunication and Interaction and Creative Arts. The school has also been awarded the Autism Accreditation by the National Autistic Society. Since April 2016, Annie Sutton. Has worked in education since 1998, starting as an SEN assistant before qualifying as a maths teacher and becoming head of year in a large West Sussex secondary school. She joined St Joseph’s in 2010 as deputy head, initially with responsibility for inclusion and achievement as well as leader of RE, and was appointed to the top job after the retirement of long standing principal – Mary Fawcett. Annie has five children.

Academic matters

St Joseph’s children have a great range of learning difficulties (ASD; ADD; CLD; LD; SCLD; SLCN; SLD; SPLD). The majority are on the ASD spectrum, ranging from those who also have Downs, who are non-verbal and who suffer from eg Oppositional Defiant Disorder, to high functioning learners who may achieve a few GCSEs. We cater for students with MLD/SLD and those on the Autistic Spectrum. We also specialise in the development of learners with communication difficulties.
