This is a distinctive, unashamedly academic school. After being greeted by gowned school marshal, Sergeant Khim Sherchan, formerly of the Gurkhas, we are ushered into a grand Norman Shaw arts and crafts town house with William Morris wallpaper. Boys exercise in Battersea Park at least twice a week, and there are regular fixtures for A-D teams. However, break times are spent indoors, and parents who would prefer somewhere with outside space where boys can let off steam should look elsewhere...

Since 1994, the engaging, cultured Nicholas Kaye MA ACP, Cambridge English graduate followed by music research (60s). Whilst deputy head here, following a brief spell at Asra Hawariat School in Addis Ababa, the opportunity arose to acquire the school from the Vernon Trust, which he seized with typical energy, creating an independent charitable trust. Sussex House has never looked back, going from strength to strength, achieving the recent accolade of Best Prep School award. Parents admire this ‘erudite man’ and the boys sum him up as ‘diverse, really talented, passionate about music, poetry, architecture, and a playwright’. His study/Victorian parlour is crammed with bookshelves containing leather-bound volumes and novels by past Old Cadogans, an ornamental pianoforte and a cornucopia of porcelain, potted plants and objets d’art.
