Not immediately impressive, the main school buildings abut the main road, yet to walk through the gates is a revelation. The school backs onto 150 acres of pristine gardens, beautifully maintained games fields and a small working farm complete with pigs, cows and horses. There are proper napkins at mealtimes, and grace is said. The children are genuinely charming - friendly, respectful but responsive, confident and very happy indeed; well motivated and thoroughly self disciplined – we saw groups working on their art, music and sports during break...

Since 2010, Alastair J L Thomas (30s), married with two daughters, the eldest of whom is at the school. A degree in French from King's College, London was followed by a brief stint at John Lewis before he joined Kingshott Prep School, where he became head of French. Moved to The Downs School nearby as head of French and Latin before becoming deputy head at Lambrook in Ascot.

A very social animal, approachable and full of energy, very keen on sports and music, eager to update the facilities of the school while retaining its ethos of fresh air, muddy knees, and plenty of independence.
