What The Good Schools Guide says..
Instilling confidence is high on the list of priorities here. One classroom door boldly declares: ‘We are warriors not worriers’. A favourite tree was once threatened with being chopped down – the girls literally tied themselves to it in protest, apparently.
What the school says...
'The best thing about the Maynard is everyone makes you feel special', so said one of our youngest juniors on returning home after her first day at the Maynard. The special atmosphere of purposeful endeavour in a caring and nurturing environment is not just reserved for day one. There is a busy, lively feel every day in the Junior School, where teachers take care to design lessons which stimulate curiosity and encourage a love of learning which stays with each child throughout the juniors, into the senior school and beyond.
The Junior Department is housed in its own building within the main school campus. Juniors have ready access to all of the senior school facilities for specialist learning. Each girl receives plenty of individual attention and is encouraged to develop her own skills, talents and interests. The girls would be delighted to show you what makes the Junior Department such a special place; you are very welcome to visit us.

Thank the school
Parents and pupils often have cause to acknowledge the help and support they have received from their schools, for example in helping in the choice of further education or careers. "Say thank you" allows you to send a quick note of appreciation to the school in general or to an individual teacher.
This is a thank you to your school, teacher or careers adviser who helped you to get where you are now.
Please fill in the fields below, which we will transform into a letter of thanks from you to them.
All-through school (for example 3-18 years). - An all-through school covers junior and senior education. It may start at 3 or 4, or later, and continue through to 16 or 18. Some all-through schools set exams at 11 or 13 that pupils must pass to move on.
What The Good Schools Guide says
Head of junior school
Since 2006, Mr Steven Smerdon, originally from Bath, educated at Exeter University. His career has taken him to Edinburgh, Australia and back to Exeter again. Friendly, welcoming and enthusiastic. Teaches RE and drama and is child protection officer for the whole school. In his 40s, he enjoys the great outdoors and is a keen cyclist. Maynard Junior is above average academically, but he says, ‘the most important thing we teach is how to get on with people.’ Parents say, ‘Mr Smerdon clearly loves his job and the girls love him’.
