What says..

‘The truth is we’re all a bit geeky and the opportunity to work with exceptionally bright kids stretching the curriculum is just glorious,’ said the principal on behalf of the 12 members of teaching staff who take no persuading to go above and beyond – most recently hosting webinars on eg the chemistry of love and on how the Covid vaccine works. You’re told at the beginning that you’ll never be bored in lessons here and it’s true.’ ‘I came here for the sport,’ aren’t words you’ll hear uttered here – even the principal uses the word ‘afterthought.’ But despite ...

What the school says...

The National Mathematics and Science College ('NMSC') is a selective STEM sixth form college that prepares students for successful entry to -and success at- top Russell Group Universities (including Cambridge and Oxford) and other leading universities world wide.

100% students achieved A*-A in Mathematics A level (2017, 2018, 2019, 2020)
100% students achieved A*-A in Further mathematics GCSE (2017,2018)
90% students achieved grades A*-B across all subjects (2018)

63% of grades were awarded an A* and 91% A*-A in 2020.

NMSC is a keen participant in national and international Olympiads. Here are just two examples:
In 2017, a stunning three-quarters of NMSC’s A Level maths cohort gained certificates of distinction in the EUCLID International mathematics contest, an award given only to the top 25ndidates. All NMSC’s students who entered the competition did brilliantly well enabling the College to be placed 71st and in the top 15% of the 484 participating international schools.
In 2018, NMSC entered 16 students into the Chemistry Olympiad and they produced a stellar performance, as all ranked in the top 25% of 7966 entries in the UK. In fact, four NMSC students were ranked in the top 50 in the country.

What The Good Schools Guide says

Since September 2020, Andy Kemp BSc MSc EdD MBA (40s). Headhunted for the role while head of Stephen Perse Foundation Senior School, although the fact that (a) he had never even heard of the college and (b) Stephen Perse was something of a family affair (his wife, Ruth, is a maths teacher there and their two daughters both attend the school) meant he took some persuading. ‘But, as with the students, once I understood the concept of the college I found it impossible to resist.’ The plan was for the family to move from Cambridge but since Covid put a spanner in the works he’s currently resigned himself to a long commute (audio books help - currently Colin Dexter’s Inspector Morse series) and some overnight stays nearby.

Please note: Independent schools frequently offer IGCSEs or other qualifications alongside or as an alternative to GCSE. The DfE does not record performance data for these exams so independent school GCSE data is frequently misleading; parents should check the results with the schools.
