King's College School was originally founded to educate the 16 Choristers of the world famous King's College Choir and moved to its present site in West Road in 1878. As well as the Choristers, the School now educates a total of 400 boys and girls aged 4 -13. The children enjoy a rich academic curriculum with many opportunities to excel musically, on the sports field or on stage, and there is a full programme of extra curricular activities. Since 2018, Yvette Day, previously head of the Chorister School, Durham. She is also Master over the Choristers, in charge of the education and care of the boys who have sung in King’s College Choir since the College’s foundation by King Henry VI. A musician herself, she holds an MMus in historical musicology from the University of London (more recently she also completed a law conversion course with the College of Law) – ‘There is something of the delight of the most magical sweet shop in being able to listen to King’s singing every day!’ she says.

Special Education Needs
The Learning Support Centre (formerly the Dyslexia Centre) has approximately 40 pupils who attend the Centre on a daily or weekly basis. Some pupils receive help in groups of 2 or 3 but most have individual tuition if it is thought that they can take part in the full curriculum. Teaching programmes are highly effective in boosting reading, writing, spelling and study skills. Careful attention is given to helping children's self-esteem. The Learning Support Centre works closely with teaching staff, parents and outside specialists to achieve the best possible progress with the children.
