Special Education Needs

Prestfelde is a non-selective school with a whole school policy aimed at meeting the needs of individual pupils. The staff in the main school are aware and knowledgeable about a variety of specific difficulties, such as dyslexia and dyspraxia. We have a strong Learning Support Department, which was described as "a major strength of the school" in our last inspection. We specialise in specific learning difficulties (dyslexia). We have a Learning Support Centre in which we teach children individually or in small groups. It is staffed by one full-time tutor, who acts as co-ordinator, and three part-time tutors, all of whom have a diploma or certificate in SpLD teaching. We also have a CLANSA-qualified Support Assistant, who offers in-class support for individual children as required. We can offer a wide range of support, from basic and maths, to help with preparation for Common Entrance exams in almost any subject. We think that reading is of paramount importance and our policy is to pick up early on poor readers and put in some effective help, in cooperation with the child's form teacher. We encourage the involvement of parents. Our aim is that most children should leave the school with the necessary skills and strategies to be independent and effective learners.
