A small, independent college founded in 1972, it operates in a listed Georgian building on George IV Bridge, near the National Library of Scotland. Director of studies

Since 1993, Lily Crawford MA (60s). Read English literature and classics at Edinburgh, following on with a PGCE from the Moray House School of Education and Sport, and a diploma in administration from Napier.

As director of studies, she is at the epicentre of the college and the point of contact for potential pupils and parents. Helpful, informative and honest. No blowing her own trumpet or big pitches. Genuinely works with pupils to achieve the best they can, while also being realistic: ‘Not everyone can achieve an A, band 1.’ During her tenure, introducing EFL has been her main achievement, but has also changed the fee structure to make it more affordable, introduced flexi-study to accommodate each pupil’s circumstances and introduced a wider range of subjects.
