All the pupils we met spoke with appreciative warmth of the staff who were looking after them. They did not seem to possess any of the casual arrogance one sometimes detects in public school pupils. They were open, trusting, forthcoming and friendly. One of the most delightful incidents of our tour was witnessing what is locally referred to as the dash for cash. Since 2013, Mr Peter Middleton MA. Previously deputy head at Clifton College, Mr Middleton was born in Somerset and educated at Radley before reading chemistry at Oriel College, Oxford. He began his teaching career at Cheltenham College, where he was a deputy housemaster, master in charge of rowing and first VIII coach, and an officer in the army section of the CCF. Not difficult to see the direction he was taking, confirmed by his next move, which was back to Oxford, to St Edward’s, where he was a housemaster, re-formed the royal navy section, was master i/c rowing and, by now, an international rowing coach.
