The mansion, which dominates the site, was once the girls’ boarding house from the senior school. Reception is impressive and the décor reflects the ‘deckchair’ stripes of the smart and eye-catching blazers. The small hall functions as assembly space, drama, PE and dining room. In the latter, catering all happens onsite and the nutritional value is overseen by the food and nutrition teacher from the senior site. Parents are local and from further afield, think Grange and Kirkby Lonsdale. Post Covid, some are from the cities, occasionally overseas, looking for semi-retirement in a fresh landscape, in every sense. Form group parents socialise together - gym, running clubs etc. Everyone is so active here, be ready...

With adventurous learning at the heart of our Junior School provision, children learn vital skills that they take back into the classroom, as well as take with them through life. Whether they are taking part in Forest School, Adventure lessons, performing on the outdoor stage, or studying wind speeds at the top of a lakeland fell, there is always challenge, fresh air and enjoyment.
We provide an exceptional education for boys and girls between the ages of 3 and 11. We are located in the most idyllic setting, high above Windermere, on the wooded slopes overlooking the lake and the Langdales beyond. Children from the Lake District have been educated at Windermere School for over a century, together with boarders who join us from all over the world.
Maths and English start each day, and Science is the key to the remaining curriculum, which includes Art, Drama, Design and Technology, all major sports and our unique Adventure programme.
We pride ourselves on treating each and every child as an individual. Their academic aspirations, hopes, needs, interests, potential and, most importantly, their enjoyment are at the very heart of our educational process.

Junior School Headteacher
Since September 2021, Jenny Davies. After training as a nursery nurse, she gained a BA in English with QTS and started at junior school over 20 years ago. Safe to say she knows the school and children very well. Has worked in all years, including up to sixth form in the senior school, but mostly in Key Stage 1. Experience as designated safeguarding lead and pretty much every other role going. Teaches life skills and even manages to make learning about puberty ‘fun,’ according to year 6: ‘Best headmistress ever!’ Parents value her experience. She is ‘very approachable’ and ‘always actions’ any query they may have.
Enjoys dog walking in the mountains with husband and family. Her office has the obligatory magnificent view of Windermere. Light and airy...

Special Education Needs
At Windermere School we ensure that all pupils are able to access a rich, broad and balanced curriculum in order to succeed in fulfilling their potential. This is achieved in a warm, caring and supportive environment, through careful analysis of individual learning strengths and styles. Appropriate support measures are implemented as necessary.
