We have met with Able Tutors’ staff. In addition, 20 clients and 20 tutors completed an on-line survey (sent to 42 clients and 40 tutors) and we followed this up with additional short phone interviews with some of those surveyed.
The Good Schools Guide review of Able Tutors
Founder Lynne Nathan is at the helm, though these days she also has a first mate - her California-based daughter-in-law, Melissa, who is a qualified teacher. ‘She’s a great person to sound things off against and I think – hope – her presence gives us more kudos,’ says Lynne, though truth be told, this old-school tutor agency has never lacked cachet. Lynne is well-known for her integrity – ‘I won’t offer false hope,’ she told us in her customary forthright manner. She’s compassionate and communicative too, which almost certainly helps account for the recent growth in work with children in the care system (usually between three and 10 at any one time). And she’s opinionated –get her going on pretty much any aspect of education and she’ll almost certainly have a strong view.
Lynne was an educational late starter. A reluctant office worker (‘you were expected to take a secretarial course and get married,’) she was permanently bored and realised she was cleverer than the people she worked for. Accordingly she took herself off to night school, gained an A level in English and then whistled through a part-time degree in English and history at Middlesex University in just three-and-a-half years, not bad going given that she was also raising young children at the time (she followed it up with an MA in history in 2020). A career in teaching followed but turned out to be a mixed and often stressful experience. When parents kept asking her to give their children extra help in English and to recommend maths tutors, turning this support and advice into a paid career was the answer – and the company was born in 2009.
The Good Schools Guide Education Consultants offer assessments in English, maths and in reasoning. Most schools assess these subjects when considering a child for a place. This is especially important for children coming from different countries with different educational systems. But there can be many reasons for checking a child's progress in these basic skills.
