The Good Schools Guide review of Choice Home Tutoring
When Jo Murphy (BA in human movement studies from Leeds, PGCE from Loughborough) gave up teaching to be a full-time mum to three, she caught wind of how tricky local parents were finding it to get a decent tutor. The potential benefits of starting up the surprisingly unusual beast of a Manchester-based tutor agency were not wasted on her – a home-based, work-around-the-kids, nice little earner directly relating to her passion for education and helping the local community. Bingo – although these humble beginnings from 2011 bear little resemblance to today’s agency, which provides around 150 tutors to over 500 families a year. As such, Choice is now an office-based (albeit attached to an Irish church in Didsbury – the church hall proving handy for workshops) and provides full-time work (and some) not just to Jo, but her husband Colin (BSc in sports science and PGCE, both from Loughborough) and Gill Palmer, whose degree in business studies made her the ideal candidate for all things admin – everything from handling tuition records to customer payments.
The Good Schools Guide Education Consultants offer assessments in English, maths and in reasoning. Most schools assess these subjects when considering a child for a place. This is especially important for children coming from different countries with different educational systems. But there can be many reasons for checking a child's progress in these basic skills.
