The Good Schools Guide review of Katie Jayne Tutors

After 10 years of primary school teaching and tutoring – first in the UK (mainly the independent sector) then abroad (Italy for two years and Austria for three) – Katie Jayne Gaida (MA in English and psychology and PGCE, both from Exeter University) decided it was time for a break from the intensity of the classroom. ‘I loved the teaching but hated the box ticking – focusing on the tutoring seemed the solution,’ she says.

The Good Schools Guide Education Consultants offer assessments in English, maths and in reasoning. Most schools assess these subjects when considering a child for a place. This is especially important for children coming from different countries with different educational systems. But there can be many reasons for checking a child's progress in these basic skills. • Enjoy Education overview

Review snapshot: "Founded in 2006 by Kate Shand who is committed, passionate, energetic and hugely likeable. • Capital Tuition overview

Review snapsot: Most tutoring is by trained teachers for GCSEs and A levels, with a little (but growing) amount at university level (‘but we hold our hands up if we can’t help, for instance we recently had to turn down a tutoring request from a property development student,’ says Matthew). Specialist subjects currently span biology, chemistry, physics, maths, further maths, English language, English lit, geography, history, RE, philosophy and ethics, psychology, French, Spanish, German, Latin, Ancient Greek, PE, business studies and economics. Small amount of 11+ and 13+ also on offer from non-teacher trained tutors.
