What the school says

KES Prep is a co-educational independent school in Hampshire, offering a nurturing and inspiring environment for children aged 2 to 11. As the preparatory school for King Edward VI School, Southampton, KES Prep plays a key role in preparing pupils for their next steps, ensuring they are well-prepared for senior education and beyond.

KES Prep provides a well-rounded curriculum that balances traditional values with modern teaching approaches. From early years through to upper prep, the school focuses on helping pupils build confidence, creativity and critical thinking skills. Every pupil is encouraged to explore their potential and grow in all areas, with a strong emphasis on academic success, personal development and co-curricular activities.

In the early years, young children get a fantastic start with specialist nursery care that supports early learning and development. The nursery creates a friendly, play-based setting where children can build social skills and establish a solid foundation for lifelong learning. Strong relationships are fostered between children, teachers and parents, ensuring every child feels supported and valued.

Pre-prep, which covers years 1 and 2, offers a balanced approach to learning, blending academic challenges with personal growth. Specialist lessons in subjects like performing arts, languages, physical education, and outdoor education enrich the experience. Small class sizes allow for individual attention, helping pupils build confidence, resilience and a love of learning.

Lower prep, which includes years 3 and 4, builds on this foundation, preparing pupils for the more formal academic challenges of upper prep. Specialist subjects continue to be taught, while the school’s beautiful grounds provide plenty of opportunities for outdoor learning and exploration guided by a dedicated school ranger.

In upper prep, years 5 and 6, the focus shifts to preparing pupils for their move to King Edward VI School in Southampton. Pupils are encouraged to take on more independence and responsibility, with leadership opportunities across a variety of activities. Co-curricular options such as sports, music, drama, and outdoor adventures help pupils develop essential life skills like teamwork, creativity and adaptability. The head’s recommendation highlights how the school supports pupils during this important transition.

KES Prep has excellent sports facilities, giving pupils access to a wide range of physical activities. Whether it’s swimming, riding or team sports like football, cricket or tennis, there’s something for everyone. Outdoor learning is also a key part of the curriculum, with hands-on activities that help pupils connect with the natural world.

There are many co-curricular opportunities including music, coding, art and drama, which encourage creativity, teamwork and leadership. With trips, visiting speakers and exciting enrichment activities, pupils enjoy a well-rounded education that supports both academic growth and personal interests.

Pastoral care at KES Prep is exceptional, providing a supportive and safe environment where pupils can develop empathy, resilience and a strong sense of respect for others.

KES Prep ensures pupils are prepared for the next stage of their education. Through a combination of personalised learning and a close-knit community, KES Prep helps pupils grow into confident, capable individuals ready for future success.

SEN statement

Provided by the school and not part of our review

King Edward VI Preparatory School is committed to providing exceptional wellbeing and support for all pupils. Our dedicated learning support team works across the school to identify and address any barriers to learning, ensuring that every child can reach their potential.

We are broadly inclusive, offering tailored support to help pupils thrive, while maintaining a gently selective admissions process for older pupils to ensure we can meet their needs effectively. While we may not always be able to support pupils with high levels of need, we are proud of the progress every pupil makes, especially those who experience additional challenges. We recognise that every child has unique strengths, talents, and skills and helping them discover and nurture these is central to what we do at KES Prep.
