Special Education Needs

Staff in the department have recognised qualifications to work with pupils with SEN and regularly attend courses or meetings within the authority to discuss new initiatives re SEN. In Years 7-9 the SEN department support pupils with problems with literacy, numeracy and behaviour either by withdrawal or support in class. Year 12 pupils listen to pupils read during registration periods 2 mornings a week. Other support includes a lunchtime club three times a week, SuccessMaker, Wordshark, and language games. A member of the department supports pupils in a target group (children identified by junior schools–not SEN) and also supports pupils with dyslexia on a 1-1 basis each week. For students in Years 10-11 Option groups, we look at dual entry for subjects that offer courses for these pupils. Careers Interviews held for these pupils (school action plus) by the authority’s career advisor for SEN from Yr 9 onwards. We are using 'Outlook' for behaviour related problems. The school monitors pupils' behaviour from lesson to lesson ie teachers e-mail head of years/INCO if problems occur. It is possible to analyse the information to see if pupils target certain subjects, male/female staff etc. BST provides weekly support to pupils with a range of behavioural problems eg ADHD We have close working relationships with outside agencies. We hold fortnightly meetings with the Ed Psych to assist in assessments, reviews and writing IEPs for pupils; and a specialist dyslexia support teacher visits pupils each week. For students in Years 12/13 –we offer a continuation of support if needed from outside agencies. Each department has a policy for the more able/talented.
